The Ohakune Old Coach Road walking and cycleway is now open from the Ohakune Junction Railway Station to the Hapuawhenua Viaduct. (Appoxroximately 2 hour walk round trip.)

The next section is . Work on Stage II involves reinstating 3.7km of the 100-year old Coach Road that once linked Ohakune and Horopito while the North Island Main Trunk Line was being completed (due to be completed by April 2010). The Ohakune Old Coach Road will eventually become part of the 245km Mountain To Sea cycle trail, linking Mt Ruapehu to Wanganui via National Park, Whakahoro, the Mangapurua track and the Bridge to Nowhere, the Whanganui River (jet boat leg) to Pipiriki and the Whanganui River Road. The Mountain to Sea track was one of the first seven to be approved as part of the new government’s national cycleway initiative.
